Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
