Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then discovered many other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials say preliminary tests show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking representative commented the incident left him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.

"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
