This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
