Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
