Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
